Even in these times of isolation, we’re working together, in this case on Wagner’s Ring. My neighbors to the east both play in the Lyric Opera Orchestra. Lewis, shown here both as himself and as ‘Wotan’ king of the gods, reached out for help on a project he and members of the Orchestra had cooked up. In lieu of the opening night performance of Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold, from his epic music drama cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” players sent in solo performances of the leitmotivs they would have played along with a bit of context describing how the music propels the narrative. My role was to edit the clips together, clean up the audio, and then mix/master the entire piece. Since my first days recording music were of orchestras and opera singers, this was like old home week. And we were all in (our) homes!
While it’s true it will be more fun to experience Wagner non-virtually, all together at the Civic Opera House, this was a way to do what I’m all about; helping musicians collaborate. Thanks to all of the orchestra members who participated, and especially to Lewis Kirk for shepherding.
