Sam Ruesink – Production Sound Mixer

Sam Ruesink has been making things look and sound good since he was old enough to hold a camera. At 9 he ran around with a camcorder making short films. By 11, he was operating broadcast cameras and switchers at a community access channel. As a 16-year-old, he edited over 3,000 packages for customers right after they’d been skydiving. After film school at Columbia College, he went right to work as location sound recordist, editor, post-production manager and working on live broadcasts.

Sam managed post-production of 36 episodes of CNBC’s American Greed at Kurtis Productions. His debut independent feature documentary — Minnesota Tiger Man — played 15 festivals, won multiple awards, and landed distribution on streaming platforms.

As a location sound mixer and boom operator, Sam understands not only the best way to record on set but also what it should sound like when it’s edited and mixed.

Credits include James Beard Awards, NASA JPL, Northwestern Hospital, CBS Sports, Steppenwolf Theater, The Illinois State Police, and The Chicago Public Library Foundation.

He uses industry-standard gear from Sound Devices, Lectrosonics, Sanken, DPA, and others, and can scale up or down his kit for different projects.
