28 Mar “Chicago Voices” Gala Concert airs on WTTW

Lupe Fiasco at Chicago Voices

Lupe Fiasco performs “Kick, Push”

Andrew Twiss edited and mixed all the songs and audio for WTTW’s presentation of Lyric Opera’s “Chicago Voices” completing the show’s final mix at Mix Kitchen. The Gala Concert featured a full range of Chicago’s voices and sounds including:
Renée Fleming, Shemekia Copeland, Kurt Elling, Lupe Fiasco, The Handsome Family, Jessie Mueller, Matthew Polenzani, John Prine, Michelle Williams, Terrence Howard and Jusse Smollett of Fox’s Empire, The Voices of Trinity Mass Choir, and a special presentation by Rev. Jessie L. Jackson Sr.

Hosted by Fleming with musical direction by Chicago’s own Doug Peck, the show moved from Blues to Opera, Gospel to Jazz, HipHop to Folk and then mashed it up with duets by Fleming and Prine, Jessie Mueller and Elling, and ended in a rousing ‘all-sing’ featuring all the soloists with full choir.

Scott Silberstein, producer, and Matt Hoffman, director and editor, shot the February 4th gala at the Civic Opera House highlighting as many of the performances as they could to make this 90 minute special.  Silberstein and Hoffman, principals at HMS Media, supervised the entire production through post.  Twiss mixed all the music as the show’s edit came together and then assembled and mixed the entire show once the final show sequence was settled.

Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune wrote that the “Chicago Voices” gala concert “amounted to an unapologetically proud statement about what this city has meant to the art of song, the evidence mounting one full-throated tune at a time.” Highlights from the concert will air in a 90 minute special on WTTW HD: Thursday, March 30 at 9:00 pm & Sunday, April 2 at 2:00 am (Central)
